Middlesex Chamber Seminar Series PDF Print E-mail

As we all get settled into 2008, many of us have made our resolutions. Often times those resolutions include seeking avenues to further develop our professional skills and improve upon our work productivity and knowledge in our field.

In the business world, as in life itself, education is the key to sustaining growth. One of the main goals of the Chamber is to educate members on small business topics.

Providing top-notch programs on a wide range of topics at a reasonable cost to our members has always been one of the main goals of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce. I am very pleased to see that our Seminar Series has evolved into one of those programs.

The Chamber would like to thank all its members for their continued support of our Monthly Small Business Seminar Series. The response to topics presented has been very positive, with most seminars being sold out and in some cases a second session being added. Because of the large interest in professional development programs, our latest trend has been to hold two or more workshops within the same month as the occasion arises. Some of our popular topics have included Negotiation, Public Speaking, Time Management, Networking, Wage and Hour Laws, OSHA Compliance, Conflict in the Workplace, Marketing and Sales, and Employment Law, just to name a few.

And due to the hard work of the members of our Real Estate and Insurance committees, the Chamber now offers several CEU programs for Real Estate and Insurance professionals throughout the year.

Small businesses make up a large portion of our economy and the success of those small businesses is vital to the health of our region. The Chamber’s seminars place a high value on learning and training within the small business community and allow small businesses to take control of professional development training for their employees. And because the Chamber has been able to maintain affordable prices for our seminars, employers of all sizes have been able to take advantage of this tremendous learning opportunity.

On January 8, the Chamber once again offered the very popular seminar, “Developments in Sexual Harassment Prevention Training,” presented by Attorneys from the law firm Jackson Lewis, LLP. This session meets the State of Connecticut’s requirement for two hours of sexual harassment training for supervisors and managers. Due to the high demand for this seminar, two sessions were held on this important topic and both were sold out.

Over the next several months, the Chamber will be offering a variety of seminars of interest to the business community. On February 12 the seminar will be “Clutter, Chaos and The Cure; Organizing Tales, Tips and Techniques.”  People often don’t realize how damaging disorganization can be to their bottom line, and this seminar will help solve that common problem for so many.  Author, speaker and business owner Rosemary Chieppo of “Born to Organize” will be presenting and her book Clutter, Chaos and The Cure will be on sale as well.

March will be a busy month, as we have three seminars planned!  March 11 brings our seminar on wage and hour compliance for Connecticut employers.  This is one of our most popular annual topics, offering attendees the proper understanding of state and federal compliance issues regarding wage and hour law.

March 17 we will have a special seminar that will take place after the monthly Chamber breakfast meeting with guest speaker Joe Courtney at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cromwell.  This seminar, entitled “One Step Closer to Success:  An Entrepreneurs Workshop” will explore key factors that need to be addressed regarding the security of funding for your business. Charlie Moret is the Managing Director of Business Development at Connecticut Innovations and has over 25 years experience providing business assistance to entrepreneurs.

On March 25, Stephen Glick from the Chamber Insurance Trust will present a seminar called “Stabilizing the Cost of Health Care for Any Size Company.”  The rising cost of health care is a concern for businesses of any size and this seminar will provide ways to stabilize those high costs.

I urge everyone in the Middlesex County business community to take advantage of our Small Business Seminar Series. Chamber Seminars are held on the second Tuesday of the month from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., unless otherwise noted. Cost is $25 for members and $35 for non-members. For more information on the Chamber's Small Business Seminar Series or if you are interested in presenting a workshop, please contact Taren McKinney at the Chamber at (860) 347-6924 or email her at
