Workforce Development & Education

The Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce has continued to implement successful workforce development programs throughout the past year. As a result of our great working relationships with Workforce Alliance of New Haven, CT Department of Labor, Office of Workforce Competitiveness and the City of Middletown; the Chamber is able to serve as a bridge that connects job seekers to employers.  A strong workforce is the key to a strong economy and the Chamber is proud of its workforce development initiatives.  Below you will find a brief description of each program.

The Chamber once again received funds from Workforce Alliance of New Haven to operate the Middletown Youth @ Work Summer Employment Program. This program consisted of 55 Middletown students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who were between the ages of 14 and 21. These students were placed into employment on a part time basis in various private businesses and non-profit organizations in the City of Middletown. Once the school year began in September, ten of these bright young students maintained their employment when the program was revised to accommodate an after school format. The Chamber looks forward to once again working with the youth of Middletown as the school year winds down and the summer months approach.

The Chamber has continued to successfully work with the City of Middletown through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funded Middletown Worker Preparation Program.  This program is designed to service Middletown based clients who are in search of employment.

In partnership with the Community Renewal Team, the Chamber is actively involved in the Middlesex Youth Career Development Services Program or MYCDS and the Middlesex Educational Training Consortium or METC.  MYCDS partners with local public school districts and helps students who are in danger of not graduating get their academic situation straightened out.  The Chamber’s role is to help provide these students with employment and development opportunities.  METC is designed for young people who are interested in nursing careers.  After the clients are trained in both clinical and classroom settings, Chamber staff members help them develop resumes and assist in the creation of a job search strategy.  The Chamber will continue to be bridge between job seekers and employers for years to come.
